The exhibition will be launched by Senator Marie Louise O’ Donnell at a reception in the COE Gallery, Chapel Lane, Claremorris. Curator of COE 2011, Chris Hammond (MOT International & Goldsmith’s, University of London) will also be in attendance to announce the winners of this year’s exhibition.

From its humble beginnings in a school gym, the Claremorris Open Exhibition has evolved into one of the premier events on the Irish visual arts calendar. Founded in 1978, COE has served as a showcase for the very best in contemporary art, both Irish and international. As both a competition and event the exhibition has proven to be fluid in nature, adapting to the constantly evolving nature of contemporary art and the changing contexts in which it takes place. From a traditional, gallery-based exhibition of painting and sculpture to a site-based, multimedia showcase of all that is exciting, challenging, weird and wonderful, COE has consistently remained a vital force in Irish art.Both as a consequence of and a compliment to the consistently high standard of work showcased in the exhibition, COE has become renowned, both far and wide, for the calibre of curators seeking the pleasure of serving as both adjudicator and curator of the event. Indeed, the list of past curators serves as a roll call of some of the most highly regarded curators from both Ireland and the U.K. We believe that maintaining such a high standard in the selection of our curators has played an important role in ensuring the continuing high standard and success of the exhibition. This year’s exhibition carries a prize fund of €8,000 euro and over three hundred artists from both home and abroad submitted proposals for consideration by our Curator. This year’s Curator is Chris Hammond, founder and Director of MOT International and Lecturer at Goldsmith’s, University of London. Thirty four artists have been fortunate enough to be selected to participate in the exhibition and their works will be on show in a variety of locations throughout the town.

The exhibition will be open for viewing until Sep 24th. Tue – Sat: 12 – 5 pm Sun: 2 – 5pm Mon: Closed

the first DDD Zine/ 'Dahmer Daily Digest' was made for

'The Weaklings' curated Dennis Cooper @ Five Years in London

the title takes its name from the serial killer Jeffery Dahmer

over each issue the title slowly morphs into something less recognisable

but still familiar.

issue 2 'Damher Daily Digest' is made for

COE 11 which opens on the 3rd of september which is curated by Chris Hammond

issue 3 will be Demhar Daily Digest

Occupy Space are proud to

present in_flux, a large scale alternative

art fair exhibition which brings together ten artist-led project

spaces from Ireland and Europe. This temporary hub invites the

public and art practitioners to engaging in a weekend of

performances, screenings, exhibitions, art viewing and dialogue.

This project considers the

model of artist-led spaces, which provide alternative frameworks

for art practices, and represent communities where

‘doing-it-yourself’ and experimentation are key activities.

Artist-led spaces are vital, energetic elements of the visual

art fabric of many cities. This exhibition, consisting of pop-up

galleries from each artist-led space, makes reference to an

non-traditional art-fair format in which non-profit artist-led

spaces present exhibitions rather than commercial galleries

striving to sell work.

From May 26 - 29 in_flux temporarily takes over the

Thomas Street Centre, an 11,000 m2 landmark building in Limerick city centre. The ten

galleries will present their pop-up exhibitions over five

extensive floors, while the top floor will host an e v+ a bookshop and in_flux Salon, a place for discussion,

screenings and talks.

in_flux brings to Limerick a exciting

sample of diverse contemporary art practices from some of the

most interesting artist-led spaces in Ireland and Europe. This

project initiates a collaboration between grass-roots art spaces

of similar orientations, with the intention of creating new

opportunities for artists locally, nationally and

internationally, while promoting the strength of visual culture

in Limerick.

A series of events will

accompany the exhibition programme including VideoGram, 10 x10

Pecha Kucha, artist talks and visits to local studios. in_flux is partnering with Limerick

City Gallery of Art and e v+ a to present Double Act, a series of conversations,

screenings and reflections on the collaborative process with

guest appearances by a number of interesting artists, curators

and other creative types. Double Act Programme will take place in the in_flux Salon from May 26 - 28. Full

details to be announced on the LCGA website www.gallery.limerick.ie

LCGA has also extended the run

of How Capital Moves a new body of work by artist

duo Kennedy Browne, curated by Annette Moloney, to coincide with

in_flux. Originally commissioned for

the Lodz biennale Poland 2010 the work is partly a response to a

computer factory relocating to Łódź in Poland from Limerick,

Ireland. Open at Istabraq Hall, Merchant’s Quay, Limerick 9.30

- 5.30 throughout in_flux.

Concurrent to in_flux Occupy Space presents an

exhibition which considers human obsession with the end of the

world. Oops

Apocalypse presents work

by Beagles & Ramsay, Baldvin Ringsted, Sam Dargan and Alan

Mongey, responding in different ways to our fixation with the

apocalypse. Open1 - 5pm, Wednesday to Saturday.

Mayhew's Fallacy

"Mayhew's fallacy* is the idea that everyone, if sufficiently exposed to the excellent sort of poetry that I prefer, would prefer it to the less adeptly poetry they now prefer. If you like Kenny G., you probably just have not heard enough Coltrane. In other words, it's the Kantian universalization of my own individual preferences. Other people probably do this too, so even calling it "Mayhew's Fallacy" is a fallacy, but I think I am particularly good at it, or bad, if you prefer. First of all, I really do have better taste than almost anyone else,** and am much more stubborn about admitting that Mayhew's Fallacy really is a fallacy. In other words, I know "objectively" that what I am doing is an illegitimate projection of my own ideas onto everyone else, but I still cannot help doing it.

In my defense I can say a few things. I don't really have the power of coming over to your house and imposing my taste on you. The writing that emerges from "Mayhew's Fallacy" is lively and provocative. Finally, I really am smarter than you and you could learn a lot from me.***

'Killer set of left-field synth exploration from Ireland's Jonathan Mayhew AKA Evelyn War. A few releases in but relatively unknown to myself until now, Mayhew produces a haunting set of cosmic tones with a very Schulze-y vibe. Killer sonic tundra jams with plenty of unexpected changes and a super on-point sense of atmospherics. Hopefully there's plenty more to come from this project. Edition of 40.'

Brief, refreshing suite from John Elliott's (Emeralds, Mist, Outer Space, etc...) Imaginary Softwoods project, and definitely a new direction for the project. "Nine" finds John navigating the woods with four short, clear, sparkling pieces that build and swell gorgeously. Perfectly paced and ornately textured synthesizer brilliance. Extra limited edition of 50 with fold-out covers and transparent blue tapes.

Thirty-Ninth Module: Pulse Emitter- Spiritual Vistas LP

Incomparable new full-length from Daryl Groetsch's Pulse Emitter project, and HANDS DOWN album of the year, already. I want to say this is the culmination and apogee of composed synthesizer music in the new millennium, but I guarantee Daryl's got plenty more tricks up his sleeve. The profound development of Daryl's music is more and more apparent with each release, from the crackly, hollow modular nightmares of his early sides to the heartbreakingly beautiful tonal architecture of "Spiritual Vistas", each key and each turn of a knob is a giant stride for the genre as a whole. Bringing to mind some mid-period David Borden at times, or Vangelis' Blade Runner score, this is truly transcendental, emotive music. No joke, Pulse Emitter solidifies itself as the best of the best with this colossal album. The result of almost a year's work, Daryl reduces all of his one-take, live to a tape deck competitors (myself included) to almost nothing. Four deeply contemplated, brilliantly composed analog symphonies that could literally be played for any music fan. It's almost impossible for me not to toss around bold proclamations when talking about this album, but really, this is pretty much as good as it gets. Split release with EXPANSIVE, edition of 500 on black vinyl.

Fifty-Fourth Module: Moth Cock- In Pursuit of Carmichael's Hoagie C30

Two live Moth Cock sides, captured in Cleveland and Pittsburgh in November 2010. This tape marks two missed opportunities for myself (was supposed to play with them the night of the Cleveland gig but got held up at work; was supposed to go with them to Pittsburgh and celebrate my 20th bday but ended up getting sick) that i'm almost glad I missed for the sake of these amazing sets. An excellent picture of the best band in Ohio currently. Vast, organic sound portals opened with horns, strings and actual magic. Best dudes ever. Edition of 80, art by Pat.

Fortieth Module: Daniel Isaac- The Heavens Had No Light C40

Forty-First Module: Daniel Isaac- Drum and Voice CDR

Debut tape from my favorite new Ohio jammer, Columbus' Daniel Isaac. Apparently these are his first recordings EVER, which is absolutely mind-blowing to say the least. Don't really know where to start with describing this one, other than it totally shut my brain down the first time I checked it out. Completely HIGH-BROW synthesizer music, truly classy, classy stuff. High-brow as in, this could be the soundtrack to the new dark Spielberg movie or something, really. Synthesizer music as in, a full orchestra, not just a kid recording some synth tracks for the first time, just INSANE. Kind of in the "On Land" zone.. Deeply composed, building, "god I wish i thought of that" melodies, clearly representing a deep understanding of composition and structure. Just too stoked about this one, one of the nicest dudes around, really glad to be putting out his first jams, swear in five years this kid will be working on the new Scorsese score or composing ringtones for Verizon or something. Also scope the "Drum and Voice" CDR in this batch, LP on Cylindrical later this year. Edition of 80.

Counter-release to the "The Heavens Had No Light" C40 in this very batch, and just as essential. Favorite new Ohio jammer. This set is a bit more abstract than the aforementioned cassette, a suite of insanely disorienting meditations shimmering under the compact disc stratum. Apparently this set was recorded strictly using effected vocals and a broken snare drum... WHAT?? As with the cassette, this sounds like a full orchestra, maybe getting weird and busting some spare-time brilliance after they finished the Blood Diamond soundtrack or something, ha.. Don't know how this kid does it, but see the tape description for further praise. Again, scope "The Heavens Had No Light" C40, LP on Cylindrical late 2011. Edition of 40.

Forty-Fifth Module: White Prism- Reappear C34

Phenomenal set of outer-limits synthesizer music from Ben Billington (Quicksails, Tiger Hatchery....) and Josh Burke (Sky Limousine, etc.). Definitely their spaciest outing yet, and one of the best tapes from this batch. White Prism continues their winning streak (after the EXCELLENT field studies tape last year) and builds on their foundation with two side-long pieces that paint an abstract, utopian logan's run reality for the listener. They have this amazing, almost "straightforward" style that just makes this tape so LISTENABLE; there are plenty of beautiful, fluid changes and tastefully sprinkled textures. Everything is in EXACTLY the right place, but nothing is predictable or stale. Side A explores deeper interplanetary float, even getting into killer Raicevic territories at times (the ten-minute mark on this side kills me every time) and Side B is more of a sparkling tapestry of almost new age-y warmth. Overall an amazing tape to keep coming back to. Edition of 100 on transparent red tapes

Wish List for Dublin Contemporary 2011

With not much known yet about the line up and with the sudden departure of the artistic director, Dublin Contemporary is somewhat of a mystery with only months to go.

heres a short list of artists id like to see in the exhibition if i had my choice,

that also fit the brief of John Cage's 4.33/silence.

yes there are few obvious people missing

Christian Marclay 'record without a cover' would be perfect

along with his and John Zorn's music as the antithesis of silence

but also the use of chance that Cage used in creating his scores.

highlighting everything about 4.33's 'lack of sound',

is the same reason that Ryan Trecartin and Assume Vivd Astro Focus's are included.

Nate Lowman the Natroit Act

from the Astrup Fearnley Museum

'Saunter is a companion to Questions of Travel,

a small book that was published by the Douglas Hyde Gallery in 2009.

It engages with similar ideas, albeit from a different perspective,

and interweaves them with images of work that has been shown in the Gallery's recent exhibitions.'

all 3 books are worth checking out, not to mention that they make some beautiful publications for their exhibitions.

this is one of those books that i will reread again & again

a mediation on the colour blue and life in general

more philosophy than poetry but not at the same time

like a one-sided conversation your happy just to listen to

get it here & read it in one go

another wonderful book by Tao Lin, a loosely hidden autobiographical book

about the love affair between 'haley joel osment' & 'dakota fanning'.

Lin writes about the now in the now using the now

minimal use of language but everything gets said that needs to.

'everything is fucked' but thats is okay.

cheese beast.

another book for writers or people that read a lot, also this is experimental fiction at its best.

a book that is about itself and more.

you can get it from Sator Press for a limited offer of name your price $1 or more

so do get it.

this is the 1st DFW i have read, it was pretty great collection of short stories, bar one story that i didnt

really like. the novella at the end (over 100 pages is a lil long for a short story) was the one i enjoyed the most.

he feels like a writer for people who write or read a lot, i will be reading more for sure.

really great primer on classical music from 1890 on

the later half of the book was my favourite part

id love if this area was expanded into a new book

as he's a great writer.

reasons why im glad i didnt grow up in the US, this book.

the destruction of a generation of children is documented

really well in this crime story.

boy this is great!

its like an updated and more 'mature' version of crackpot.

it also makes me wanna buy Comme des Garçons clothes and see his art collection

Clarice Lispector is one i have to read more of.

life is dark and she not afraid to show it.

Dorothea Lasky is one of my new favourite poets

her poem in a recent Paris Review made me get this and her new

collection Black Life, both are from Wave Books.

Columbine by Dave Cullen great at debunking all the myths surrounding this

shooting, also interesting to see that it was the first major school shooting that was covered live by the media and how the story changed because of them.

Great irish literary magazine id never read before but glad i did

go check it out! i found out about it here.

BEE back again and is it just me or is he getting better and better?

lots of people didnt like this that much or Lunar Park but i think they're were both great.

AR-G's autobiography?

he states that he 'tells no lies but also thinks there no truth.'

pretty great read even if you havent read any of his books

and an amazing insight if you have.

Mostly been listening to Christina Carter's solo work but couldnt find a decent clip,

i saw her play years ago before a Fursaxa show. Christina Carter 'Texas Blues Working' 2xLP on the way soon from Blackest Rainbow.

John Olsen and Ben Hall in the Graveyards combo always good stuff, this is more full on the do some eerie minimal pieces too. If you can find Ben Hall's Hell Hall Mystery Series One & two grab them!
